It’s more an act of hero-worship. A misty-coloured memoir. And something of a love letter from a 52-year-old bloke who can still remember being a starry-eyed seven-year-old boy, taken to football for the first time.

Because Gordon ‘Ivor’ Davies was my boyhood idol. Although we almost knew him as Gordon ‘Norman’ Davies. More of that later.

Our moustachioed Welshman scored the first Football League goal I ever witnessed in the flesh, the opener in a 3-0 Third Division win over Portsmouth in February 1981.
