FULHAM’S friendly draw with Malaga made international headlines and went viral online after a farcical and shambolic finale.
With the ‘prestigious’ Costa del Sol Trophy up for grabs, the home side insisted on a penalty shoot-out after the match ended 2-2 – yet Fulham had other ideas and headed for their plane home, adamant that there had been no prior agreement for a spot-kick competition in the event of a draw.
When a Malaga player stuck a penalty into the empty net, wild celebrations ensued among the Spanish side, sparking internet hilarity.
Fulham didn’t return home until 5am and have a home friendly with Stuttgart at Craven Cottage on Saturday. But with silverware – albeit meaningless - up for grabs, a shoot-out would surely have been expected? And decent practice for any penalties in domestic club competition?
